UMass Lowell Ice Hockey Prepares for Weekend Showdown Against Vermont
Burlington, VT – The No. 15 UMass Lowell ice hockey team, riding a strong 6-2-0 start to the 2024-25 season, is set to face off against the Vermont Catamounts (2-4-3) in a two-game series at Gutterson Fieldhouse this weekend. Coming off a split series against then-ranked No. 9 Boston University, the River Hawks look to maintain their momentum in Hockey East play (2-1-0).
After a challenging 2023-24 season that ended with a record of 8-24-4, UMass Lowell has retooled its lineup with 17 returners and 15 newcomers, including seven transfers and eight freshmen. This fresh approach has paid off as the River Hawks currently rank 15th in both the USCHO and USA Hockey polls.
In last weekend’s series against Boston University, UMass Lowell showcased its depth with a strong road victory (5-3) in game one, highlighted by a game-winning goal from Libor Nemec. However, they fell short in game two (5-2) despite contributions from Nemec and Isac Jonsson.
Meanwhile, Vermont aims to build on its recent form, having secured a notable 4-0 win against No. 17 Massachusetts. The Catamounts, who faced their own struggles last season with a 13-19-3 record and an early exit in the Hockey East Tournament, boast returning scorers Jens Richards and Timofei Spitserov.
Historically, UMass Lowell holds a favorable all-time record of 40-17-10 against Vermont, including a 1-0-2 mark last season. A win this weekend would enhance the River Hawks’ season record to 7-2-0. Following these matchups, UMass Lowell will return home for a series against UConn on November 22 and 23.
