Vermont State Police Seeks Recruits Amid Staffing Issues
The Vermont State Police (VSP) is facing challenges with reduced staffing and an increase in calls, prompting a recruitment drive for new troopers. As 2024 comes to a close, the VSP is adopting unique initiatives to attract candidates for the upcoming winter class. Lt. Rob McKenna, the director of recruiting and training, expressed excitement about making the application and testing process easier for potential recruits.
One of the new initiatives is a “pop-up” test, where candidates can show up without prior steps or appointments. This test will be held on November 9th at two locations in Vermont. Additionally, another test on the same day at the Vermont Police Academy requires application submission beforehand. By offering tests at different sites on the same day, the VSP aims to make the process more accessible.
The next testing date will be on November 19th at the police academy, with applications to VSP required in advance. Information about how to apply, requirements, and benefits can be found on the VSP hiring website. The upcoming 119th Basic Training class for new police officers begins on January 13, 2025, at the police academy in Pittsford.
Lt. McKenna encouraged those considering a career change and interested in law enforcement to join the VSP. The opportunity to serve the community, be part of something bigger, and become a Vermont state trooper awaits potential recruits. Those interested are urged to reach out to a recruiter on the VSP website and attend the upcoming tests to start their journey in law enforcement.
