Kendra Panteah pleaded guilty to kidnapping a man in New Mexico in July 2019, who was then fatally stabbed by another man, Gilbert John Jr. Both Panteah and John had been using drugs, including methamphetamine, before the killing occurred. After the stabbing, John drove the victim’s car to a remote location and set it on fire to cover up the crime. Panteah admitted in a plea agreement that she was present during the incident and drove the car with the victim in the trunk. They eventually stopped at Bass Lake, where the victim attempted to escape and was stabbed by John with a machete. Panteah has been charged with kidnapping not resulting in death and faces at least 10 years in prison. She is described as a kind woman who struggled with substance abuse issues, which played a significant role in the tragic events that occurred. Panteah’s attorney believes that the outcome could have been different if everyone involved had been sober. The sentencing for Panteah is set for January 27th, where she could receive a maximum of 18 years in prison.
