Vermont state football champion forfeits title due to concerns about player safety.

The Windsor Yellowjackets, reigning Division III state champions of Vermont, have made the decision to forfeit an upcoming game against Lyndon Institute due to concerns over the physical safety of their young and inexperienced team. This decision comes after a disappointing 0-3 start to the season, already more losses than in any season since 2019. The announcement was confirmed by the Vermont Principals’ Association, with Windsor having gone 32-1 over the last three years, winning state championships in 2021-2023.

The move to forfeit has sparked controversy in the high school football community, with Lyndon Institute head coach expressing disappointment over the decision. Despite Windsor’s attempt to find another opponent to replace the forfeited game, the VPA has stated that the team has reached the maximum number of games permitted for the season and will not be eligible to reschedule.

While the decision to forfeit has disappointed many, Windsor’s decision reflects a focus on prioritizing the safety of their student-athletes in a physically demanding sport. The move has drawn attention to the challenges faced by young and inexperienced teams in competitive environments and highlights the importance of player safety in high school athletics. The launch of a dedicated high school sports platform by Sports Illustrated, High School On SI, will continue to provide coverage and updates on high school athletics nationwide for fans and followers.
