The University of Vermont men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 upset loss to UMBC, ending their 12-game unbeaten streak. The game-winning goal came from Joseph Picotto in the 50th minute, deflecting off a Vermont defender’s head and into the top corner. Despite several late opportunities, Vermont was unable to find the back of the net.
Head Coach Rob Dow praised the team’s defensive effort but noted the lack of offensive production in the final third. The loss snapped Vermont’s shutout streak of 339:47 by goalkeeper Niklas Herceg. This was the team’s first loss since August 22 at #9 Western Michigan.
With the loss, Vermont is tied at the top of the America East table with 10 points alongside New Hampshire. The top two teams in the league receive a bye to the America East Semifinals. The Catamounts’ next game is on November 1 against UMass Lowell. The match will be broadcast live on AmericaEast.TV.
