Minneapolis homeless camp shootings leave three dead, possibly connected, say police

Over the course of one weekend, two shootings occurred at homeless encampments in Minneapolis, resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to three others. The police believe that the two incidents may be connected. The first shooting took place early Saturday morning, killing one man and injuring two others. The second shooting occurred on Sunday afternoon, resulting in the deaths of two men and critical injuries to a woman. The police are investigating the possibility of suspects who fled the scene on foot, but no arrests have been made as of yet.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey attributed the increase in violence in and near homeless encampments to the prevalence of fentanyl, a powerful synthetic opioid. He called the shootings “incredibly tragic and sad” and stressed the importance of addressing the drug crisis to prevent further violence. The medical examiner identified the victims of the shootings as Deven Leonard Caston, Louis Lemons Jr., and Christopher Washington, all of whom died from multiple gunshot wounds.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara condemned the shootings as “outrageous” and emphasized the need for residents of encampments to accept the available resources to address drug addiction and mental health issues. The police are urging anyone with information about the shootings to come forward, as they work to solve these crimes and prevent further violence in the community.
