Brown University has placed a suspension on its Students for Justice in Palestine chapter

Brown University has suspended its chapter of Students for Justice in Palestine following a rally protesting the university’s decision not to divest its endowment from companies that support Israel. The group was informed of the suspension nearly a week after their protest, which they believe was a politically-motivated retaliation. The suspension prohibits members from holding any activities, events, meetings, or posting on social media. The group, part of the Brown Divest Coalition, criticized the university for prioritizing investments over the dignity of the Palestinian people. This comes after the university’s governing board voted against divesting from 10 companies, prompting student protests. Brown is not the only university to suspend pro-Palestinian groups, with others including Temple, Tufts, Rutgers, American, and the University of Vermont taking similar actions. Harvard University also recently suspended professors and law students for holding a protest on campus. Brown Divest Coalition condemned the university’s decision, stating that it hinders their ability to grieve collectively for the Palestinian people amidst ongoing conflicts in Gaza. Brown University did not respond to requests for comment.
