Category 1 Hurricane Oscar Hits Cuba as it Makes Landfall

Hurricane Oscar made landfall in Cuba on Sunday evening as a Category 1 storm, with winds near 80 mph. It weakened to a tropical storm as it moved across the island, bringing heavy rain that could cause flash flooding and mudslides. Cuba has been experiencing power outages since Friday. The storm is expected to head towards the Bahamas, with additional weakening likely as it interacts with the mountainous terrain of eastern Cuba. The Cuban government has issued tropical storm warnings for certain areas, with significant rainfall expected in eastern Cuba and the southeastern Bahamas. Storm surge and large waves are also anticipated along Cuba’s north shore. Oscar, described as “compact but powerful,” was initially located off the Bahamas and prompted a hurricane warning for parts of Cuba before being downgraded. Rainfall amounts of 6 to 12 inches are expected in eastern Cuba, with up to 18 inches in some areas, while the southeastern Bahamas may receive 3 to 5 inches. Turks and Caicos could see 2 to 4 inches of rain. The storm is projected to move northwest and could still be a tropical storm when it reaches the Bahamas.
