Eleven people in Pennsylvania hospitalized after consuming wild mushrooms

Eleven people in Peach Bottom Township, Pennsylvania were hospitalized after eating wild mushrooms that turned out to be toxic. The patients, including a man, a woman, and nine children, were treated at a hospital and later released. The incident occurred in Pennsylvania Dutch Country, known for its Amish culture, about 80 miles west of Philadelphia. The family members had foraged the mushrooms and consumed them on Friday night, leading to their illness.

Due to the high number of patients, the situation was classified as a “mass casualty incident.” The Delta-Cardiff Volunteer Fire Company Station 57 responded after a family member walked half a mile to find a public phone to call 911, as the Amish typically do not use cellphones. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advises against consuming wild mushrooms unless one is a trained mycologist, as many poisonous varieties, such as the Amanita phalloides mushroom known as “death caps,” can cause serious health issues or even death.

Symptoms of mushroom poisoning can include abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, and liver damage. Foraging for wild mushrooms carries risks, and it is important to be cautious and knowledgeable when consuming them.
