Kenzie Lewellen went into labor at home in Port Charlotte, Florida, as Hurricane Milton hit the Gulf Coast. Her boyfriend, Dewey Bennett, was stressed due to his father’s death during a previous hurricane. With their house flooding, they decided to go to the hospital despite the storm.
The couple faced a perilous journey to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, with only Lewellen’s mother allowed to accompany them. Lewellen faced labor pains and complications during the storm, but baby Dewey Lester Bennett IV was born healthy at 11:45 p.m. ET.
Lewellen felt an indescribable joy holding her newborn son, while Bennett never stopped smiling. The birth had special meaning for Bennett, given his father’s passing during a hurricane in the past.
Despite the challenges faced during the storm, the couple considered their son a miracle baby. They plan to tell him about his arrival during Hurricane Milton and may even joke about his stubbornness. As sunshine streamed through the hospital window, Lewellen held her son up, symbolizing hope and new beginnings amidst the devastation brought by the storm.
