Report: White House cautioned about potential Israeli war crimes shortly after October 7 in Israel-Palestine conflict.

Senior Pentagon and Department of State officials have raised concerns about potential Israeli war crimes during the October 7, 2023, war on Gaza to President Joe Biden’s administration, according to a Reuters investigation. The officials warned that the rising death toll could violate international law and harm US relations with the Arab world. They also urged a shift in the administration’s messaging from unwavering support of Israel to including sympathy for Palestinians and allowing more humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The investigation revealed that the US State Department’s top public diplomacy official expressed concerns about losing credibility among Arabic-speaking audiences by ignoring the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. The rising death toll and Israel’s actions against civilians were causing the US to be accused of complicity in potential war crimes.

On October 13, Israel dropped leaflets in northern Gaza, warning one million residents to evacuate their homes within 24 hours. The International Committee of the Red Cross warned that Israel was close to committing war crimes by displacing civilians at such a rapid pace.

The US officials also discussed expediting a rifle shipment to Israel, but the State Department’s DRL bureau recommended denying arms due to reports of human rights violations by Israeli National Police units. Despite these concerns, the US has continued to provide weapons to Israel during the conflict.

As the war in Gaza continues, the death toll continues to rise, with at least 41,802 Palestinians killed and 96,844 wounded. The Biden administration faces increasing pressure to address the humanitarian crisis and potential war crimes in the region.
