Sheriff Wayne Padgett of Taylor County, Florida, issued a warning to residents who chose to ignore evacuation orders and stay during Hurricane Helene. The Category 4 storm is expected to hit the county directly with winds up to 125 mph and a storm surge of 18-20 feet. Padgett urged residents to mark themselves with their information for identification in case of a worst-case scenario. Despite mandatory evacuation orders, many residents have chosen to stay, and it is now too late for them to leave. Padgett advised them to hunker down and prepare for the storm. The sheriff expressed concern for those in low-lying areas, stating that the storm surge poses a death threat. Padgett recommended residents in danger seek shelter outside the county, as Taylor County is directly in the storm’s path and did not open shelters due to safety concerns. Uber has offered to transport residents to shelters outside the county. The sheriff assured that power crews and food trucks are prepared to assist residents after the storm passes. Padgett acknowledged the challenges the county has faced with multiple major storms in the past year but remained optimistic about the community’s resilience. He emphasized the importance of staying prepared and resilient during the storm, calling it a “big waiting game” until it passes.
