Shigeru Ishiba, a former defence minister, has emerged victorious in the leadership election of Japan’s governing Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), positioning him to become the country’s next prime minister. Ishiba’s win comes after a tight contest against Economic Security Minister Sanae Takaichi, making him the clear favorite as the LDP holds a majority in parliament. His victory marks his fifth attempt at securing the LDP’s top job, showcasing his veteran status within the party.
Takaichi, who would have been Japan’s first female prime minister if elected, lost the run-off with a final count of 215-194. Ishiba, popular with the public, has based his campaign on security issues and proposed more oversight of US bases in Japan.
