At least 46 people, including 37 children and seven women, have drowned in rivers and ponds in Bihar, India during a Hindu religious festival. The incidents occurred while devotees were celebrating the annual festival of Jivitputrika Vrat, during which women fast and offer prayers for the well-being of their children. The rivers and ponds were swollen by recent floods following heavy rains, leading to the tragic drowning incidents. While India has seen deadly stampedes during religious events in the past, widespread drowning incidents during festivals are uncommon. The state government of Bihar has announced compensation of 400,000 rupees ($4,784) for the families of each deceased individual.
