A doorbell camera in Cedar Key, Florida captured the storm surge from Hurricane Helene sweeping past a driveway before being submerged by floodwater. In Georgia, a firefighter was killed when a tree fell onto their car in Pierce County. Tropical Storm Helene caused strong waves and flooding in downtown Charleston, South Carolina. The storm warnings in Florida were lifted or downgraded as Helene moved north, leaving over 2 million people without power in the southeastern U.S. The damage caused by Helene is extensive, with power infrastructure potentially damaged for weeks. The National Hurricane Center warned of a “dangerous and life-threatening situation” as Helene moved through Georgia, bringing strong winds and heavy rain. While Tallahassee avoided the worst of the storm as Helene weakened to a Category 1 storm, it still posed a significant threat across 12 states. Residents throughout the impacted areas were advised to shelter from the storm and stay away from windows to stay safe.
