Israel conducted a significant airstrike against Hezbollah’s military headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut, resulting in multiple explosions and destruction of buildings. The Israeli military claimed the attack was necessary to target Hezbollah’s main military base, allegedly built under residential buildings, which they used as human shields. The airstrikes were the largest on Beirut since the beginning of hostilities nearly a year ago. Reports of casualties had yet to emerge following the airstrikes.
The airstrikes have led to further escalations of violence between Israel and Hezbollah, with Hezbollah reportedly firing rockets into Israel in response to the attacks. The ongoing conflict has resulted in a significant death toll in Lebanon, with reports indicating that more than 700 people have been killed this week alone. The UN has described the situation as catastrophic, with Lebanon facing its deadliest period in years and hospitals overwhelmed by casualties.
In response to the escalating violence, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the UN General Assembly, declaring that Israel is winning the conflict and warning Iran that there is no place in the Middle East where the long arm of Israel cannot reach. Netanyahu called for a peace agreement with Saudi Arabia and urged an end to the appeasement of Iran to prevent them from acquiring nuclear weapons. The situation remains tense, with calls for a ceasefire and diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Hezbollah.
