New York City Mayor Eric Adams has been charged with five federal charges, including wire fraud, bribery, and solicitation of a contribution by a foreign national, according to a 57-page federal indictment. The charges stem from allegations that Adams accepted luxury international travel from a wealthy businessman and a Turkish government official over nearly a decade. He is accused of providing favorable treatment in exchange for these benefits.
The indictment was unsealed shortly after FBI agents searched Adams’ home and seized his phone for the second time. Several prominent politicians, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, have called for Adams to resign. However, other powerful figures in New York, such as Sen. Chuck Schumer and Gov. Kathy Hochul, have not yet made any statements regarding Adams’ charges.
This is not the first time Adams has been under federal investigation, as his administration has been facing public corruption probes and investigations into campaign fundraising practices. Despite the charges, Adams has maintained his innocence, stating that any accusations against him are false and based on lies. He has vowed to defend himself and continue leading the city as mayor.
