Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy addressed the United Nations Security Council to emphasize that negotiations will not be enough to end the war in Ukraine, and that Russia must be “forced into peace” as the sole aggressor and violator of the UN Charter. Zelenskyy is pushing for support for a “victory plan” to end the conflict that began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. He rejected proposals for a trade of territory with Putin to end the war, stating that Russia occupies less than 20% of Ukraine and continues to press forward on the eastern front line.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy criticized North Korea and Iran for providing arms to Russia, calling them Moscow’s “de facto accomplices”. He also raised concerns about China’s support for Russia, accusing them of providing resources for Russia’s war machine. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi rejected these accusations, stating that blaming China for the Ukraine issue is irresponsible.
UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated the UN’s strong support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, condemning Russia’s invasion as a clear violation of international principles. The meeting highlighted the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the need for international pressure to force Russia into peace. Zelenskyy’s visit to the US coincides with the upcoming presidential election, where Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are facing off, with opinions divided on their stances towards Ukraine.
