Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu made a strong statement at the United Nations General Assembly, calling for Israel to be held accountable for its actions in Gaza, including what he described as genocide and attacks on journalists. He condemned Israel’s killing of civilians and destruction of infrastructure in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as its attempts to cover up its crimes by targeting media outlets. Muizzu also called for support for a sovereign Palestinian state on pre-1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
In addition to his stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Muizzu also highlighted the urgent need for world leaders to address the climate crisis, which poses a severe threat to the low-lying Maldives. He emphasized the importance of rich countries and major carbon emitters fulfilling their financial pledges to help developing nations adapt to climate change and called for increased funding as the COP29 conference approaches.
The Maldives government previously announced a ban on Israelis following public outrage over Israel’s actions in Gaza, where thousands have been killed and displaced. Muizzu’s strong condemnation of Israel’s actions at the UN reflects the growing international concern over the situation in the region and the need for accountability and peace.
