United Nations agencies have called for an end to the humanitarian catastrophe in the Gaza Strip, as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly. The heads of various UN agencies, including the World Food Programme and UNICEF, are demanding safe and unimpeded access for humanitarian aid workers in Gaza, where nearly 300 aid workers have been killed. The UN officials stated that 2.1 million residents are in urgent need of food and livelihood assistance, with healthcare decimated by more than 500 attacks.
The Health Ministry in Gaza reported at least 24 people killed and 60 wounded in Israeli military attacks within a 24-hour period. Al Jazeera’s Hani Mahmoud described the conditions in Gaza as desperate, resulting from the ongoing intense bombing campaign by the Israeli military. The war in Gaza began in 2023 after Hamas fighters killed 1,200 people in Israeli communities and took captives back to Gaza. Since then, Israel has reportedly killed over 41,400 people in Gaza, displacing the majority of the population and causing hunger and disease.
The UN officials are urging global leaders to intervene and end the suffering in Gaza, emphasizing the need for humanitarian access and an end to violence in the region. The ongoing conflict has resulted in a dire situation in Gaza, with widespread devastation and a lack of essential services. The UN agencies are pleading for immediate action to address the crisis and provide much-needed assistance to the people of Gaza.
