A new national NBC News poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris with a 5-point lead over former President Donald Trump among registered voters, indicating a shift in the presidential race since July. Harris’ favorability has jumped 16 points, giving her an edge over Trump in terms of being seen as competent and effective and having the health to be president.
Despite Harris’ lead, Trump maintains advantages on the economy and inflation, with the cost of living being voters’ top concern. Some of Trump’s erosion in the polls is attributed to Republicans who may still come back to him.
Harris performs well among certain demographics, including Black voters, women, and independents. However, there are warning signs for Democrats, as inflation and the cost of living remain top issues, and a significant percentage of voters are concerned that Harris will continue the same approach as Biden’s presidency.
The poll also shows that 65% of voters believe the country is on the wrong track, echoing sentiments from previous elections. The level of interest among young voters remains low, and Harris’ recent debate with Trump did not significantly sway voters either way.
Overall, the poll indicates a shifting political landscape with Harris gaining momentum, but the race remains tight and the final outcome uncertain.
