A Texas couple was sentenced to more than a decade in prison each after their pit bulls got loose and killed an 81-year-old man in San Antonio last year. Christian Moreno was sentenced to 18 years, and Abilene Schnieder was sentenced to 15 years for the mauling that resulted in the death of Ramon Najera and injuries to his wife, Juanita. The dogs attacked the Najeras while they were running errands nearby, and firefighters had to use pickaxes to fend off the animals. The couple was found criminally negligent for not providing adequate fencing and allowing the dogs to roam free. The animals involved in the attack were euthanized. Juanita Najera, who suffers from PTSD as a result of the incident, expressed her pain and loss in court. Previous complaints had been made about loose and aggressive dogs from the couple’s home. They pleaded guilty to the attack resulting in death. The Bexar County District Attorney emphasized the importance of responsible dog ownership and ensuring the safety of the community. If paroled, Moreno and Schnieder are prohibited from owning or possessing dogs. Their attorneys did not respond to requests for comment.
