Russian President Vladimir Putin made a joking comment earlier this month stating that Moscow was supporting Democratic candidate Kamala Harris in the upcoming U.S. presidential election. This led to the White House urging Putin to stop commenting on the election. However, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov clarified that Putin was simply joking and has a good sense of humor.
Lavrov mentioned that Russia’s foreign policy towards the U.S. remains consistent regardless of who is in power, as they believe the country is controlled by the so-called ‘deep state’. This assertion was made without providing evidence.
In a separate development, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his desire to meet former President Donald Trump during his upcoming visit to the United States. Zelenskyy plans to present his “victory plan” in the war against Russia to key American leaders including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
Zelenskyy’s plan is aimed at ending the war diplomatically and involves seeking more military, economic, and diplomatic support from the U.S. to counter Russian aggression. Despite Russian forces making slow progress in eastern Ukraine, Zelenskyy is determined to achieve a ‘just peace’ and has ruled out freezing the conflict.
The Ukrainian leader hopes to garner support from Washington to lift restrictions on long-range missile strikes inside Russia and strengthen Ukraine’s position in the ongoing conflict. His meetings with American leaders are scheduled for September 26, with a potential meeting with Trump on the same dates.
