UN warns that escalating violence between Israel and Hamas and Hezbollah could lead to a major conflict in Lebanon

In a recent airstrike in Beirut, Israel killed at least 14 people, including a senior Hezbollah leader, leading to fears of further escalating tensions between Israel and Iran-backed groups Hezbollah and Hamas. The United Nations has warned that continued violence could result in a devastating regional conflict. The Israeli military stated that the attack targeted Ibrahim Aqil, a top Hezbollah commander wanted by the US for his alleged involvement in a 1983 bombing. Lebanon confirmed his death, escalating the already high tensions between Israel and Hezbollah.

This attack follows a series of other incidents, including explosions of thousands of pagers carried by Hezbollah members, leading to over 3,000 injuries and 42 deaths. The UN has called for a diplomatic solution to avoid further conflict. The US has denied involvement in the attacks and urged all parties to refrain from actions that could lead to war.

Following the attack, Hezbollah launched over 100 rockets at northern Israel, hitting military bases in the Golan Heights. This led to further Israeli airstrikes in south Lebanon, causing significant destruction. The healthcare sector in Lebanon has been overwhelmed, with doctors treating numerous injuries, including victims who lost limbs and eyes due to the bombings.

The UN has condemned the attacks, stating they violate international law and could be considered war crimes. Lebanese health officials have described the incident as a significant test of their healthcare system’s resilience in the face of multiple crises. The UK government has advised its citizens to leave Lebanon due to the escalating conflict with Israel and the risk of further violence.
