Donald Trump announced that he will be meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi next week, praising Modi as fantastic while also criticizing India for being a “very big abuser” in terms of trade policies with the U.S. Trump did not provide details on the meeting, and the Indian Embassy did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Trump had previously visited India in 2020, aiming to strengthen trade ties between the two countries. India is currently the second-largest trading partner of the U.S., behind China. Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. from Sept. 21 to 23, attending the fourth Quad Leaders’ Summit and speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York, marking his first visit since winning a third term in office in June.
During Modi’s previous state visit to Washington in 2023, the U.S. and India signed several technology and defense deals, signaling closer bilateral relations. Recently, the U.S. Department of State announced a partnership with India to enhance the global semiconductor value chain, highlighting the importance of collaboration between the two nations in advancing the digital transformation underway. This partnership aims to benefit both countries and expand India’s semiconductor industry.
