The war in Ukraine continues to escalate as the conflict enters its 934th day. On Monday, September 16, 2024, a Russian-guided bomb struck a multistorey apartment building in Kharkiv, resulting in one death and 42 injuries. In the eastern city of Pokrovsk, at least one person was killed in Russian shelling, with water and electricity being cut off to many residents by recent strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed frustration with the slow delivery of Western arms, stating that Ukrainian forces were suffering high losses in the east. Ukraine’s Air Force reported the destruction of 10 out of 14 drones launched by Russia, as well as the targeting of missiles towards the southern region of Odesa.
Russia’s Ministry of Defence claimed to have destroyed 29 Ukrainian drones targeting Russian regions, with 15 being brought down over the Bryansk region. In politics and diplomacy, United States National Security adviser Jake Sullivan promised support for Ukraine in its fight against Russia.
Zelenskyy urged Western allies to allow Ukraine to target military bases in Russia following the attack on Kharkiv. However, UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of “bluster” over his warning that such actions would provoke NATO.
Additionally, Ukraine’s spy chief highlighted challenges facing Ukrainian forces, including increased Russian production of guided bombs and shipments of artillery ammunition from North Korea. As tensions continue to rise, the situation in Ukraine remains critical as both sides push for military superiority.
