Four people were injured when police officers shot at a man wielding a knife at a Brooklyn train station after he refused to stop for fare evasion. The injured included the man with the knife, one officer, and two innocent bystanders. The injured include a critical 49-year-old man, a stable 37-year-old suspect, and a 26-year-old woman with a graze wound. The wounded officer is expected to recover. The interim Police Commissioner promised a thorough investigation into the incident while expressing gratitude that the officer will be okay. The incident occurred after officers confronted the man on the platform for not paying his fare, leading to a confrontation where he threatened the officers with a knife. The officers fired multiple shots after unsuccessfully attempting to use Tasers to subdue the man. The suspect has a criminal history and a mental illness, according to officials. Mayor Eric Adams visited the wounded officer in the hospital and expressed concern for innocent bystanders getting caught in the crossfire. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority expressed their concern for bystanders and mentioned the presence of cameras at the station. The NYPD has not released video footage of the incident, which took place on the L line in Brownsville. This incident is reminiscent of a 2019 incident where NYPD officers accidentally shot and killed two fellow officers during separate on-duty incidents.
