The Akron Police Department released body camera footage and surveillance video of the fatal officer shooting of Michael Jones, a man suspected of stealing a U-Haul box truck in Ohio. The footage shows the events leading up to the shooting, including Jones’ attempted arrest and the moments immediately after the shooting. The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on paid leave and has not been publicly identified. Police were investigating a stolen vehicle at a gas station when the shooting occurred. In the footage, the officer can be seen approaching Jones in the U-Haul, trying to arrest him, and ultimately firing two shots at him. Jones was pronounced dead at the scene. The officers administered first aid and recovered a loaded firearm from inside the U-Haul. The Bureau of Criminal Investigations is conducting the investigation, and the case will be reviewed by the Ohio Attorney General’s Office and the Summit County Grand Jury. The Mayor of Akron expressed condolences to Jones’ family and emphasized the importance of open conversations about public safety. Jones’ children, represented by an attorney, are seeking justice and accountability for their father’s death. They believe the officers’ actions were unwarranted and are calling for consequences.
