Tesla has announced a recall involving approximately 9,100 of its Model X sports utility vehicles in the US due to an issue with the front and center roof cosmetic trim pieces potentially separating, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash. This is the second recall related to this problem since 2020. The recall affects Model X SUVs from the 2016 model year. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, these trim pieces may have been adhered without primer, leading to the separation.
Tesla stated that a process change was implemented at the supplier in July 2016 to prevent this issue in later models. The company will test the adhesion of the roof trim and reattach the pieces as needed at no cost to owners. Despite no reports of crashes or injuries related to the recall issue, Tesla has acknowledged around 170 reports and claims that may be linked to the problem.
This recall is a rare physical recall for Tesla, which typically addresses issues through over-the-air software updates. Earlier this year, the automaker recalled nearly 2.6 million vehicles due to safety concerns. Ford Motor, on the other hand, has recalled approximately 3.6 million vehicles in the US, according to Bizzycar, a recall management platform developer. In June, Tesla also recalled its newest model, the Cybertruck, marking the fourth time the majority of Cybertrucks were subject to recall.
