Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has revealed the objective behind the military incursion into Russia’s Kursk region, stating that the aim is to create a buffer zone to prevent further attacks by Moscow across the border. This operation, launched on August 6, has already achieved significant results in destroying Russian war potential near Toretsk. Zelenskyy has appealed to international allies, including the United States, the United Kingdom, and France, to speed up deliveries of much-needed military hardware to support Ukraine’s defensive operations.
The Ukrainian military has successfully destroyed key bridges in Kursk to disrupt Russian supply routes, with the second bridge targeted in less than two weeks. The incursion into Kursk has seen Ukrainian forces seize villages, capture prisoners, and force the evacuation of tens of thousands of civilians. Ukraine aims to change the dynamic of the conflict while avoiding the occupation of Russian territories.
Zelenskyy’s senior aide, Mykhailo Podolyak, emphasized that the military operation in the Kursk region is intended to persuade Russia to enter a fair negotiation process, rather than seeking to occupy Russian territories. Ukrainian officials believe that the destruction of Russian war potential and strategic infrastructure will lead to a more favorable position at the negotiating table. The ongoing fighting between Russian and Ukrainian forces highlights the continued struggle and the importance of international support for Ukraine in its efforts to defend against Russian aggression.
