Authorities and residents in Sudan reported that at least 85 people, including women and children, were killed in a brutal attack by fighters from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces in the village of Galgani. The RSF fighters looted, burned, and indiscriminately opened fire on unarmed residents after they resisted attempts to abduct and sexually assault women and girls.
The RSF has been accused of massacres, rapes, and other violations across the country since the conflict began in April last year. In this latest attack, witnesses described how hundreds of fighters invaded the village, causing destruction and chaos. The medical center in the village received at least 80 bodies by Friday, including women and minors.
The RSF has previously attacked other areas in Sudan, causing displacements and devastation. Efforts to resume peace talks between the military and the RSF, led by the United States, have been underway. However, the talks have faced challenges with the military boycotting and the RSF not actively participating.
The conflict in Sudan has resulted in tens of thousands of deaths and pushed the country to the brink of famine. Atrocities such as mass rape and ethnically motivated killings have been reported, leading to war crimes and crimes against humanity. The ongoing war has also led to the world’s largest displacement crisis, with over 10.7 million people forced to flee their homes since the fighting began.
