Three European countries – France, Germany, and the United Kingdom – have issued a joint statement urging for de-escalation and calling for a ceasefire in Gaza amid rising tensions in the region. The leaders of these nations have warned against any potential attacks by Iran and its allies in retaliation for recent killings of senior members of Hamas and Hezbollah.
The statement emphasizes the need for regional stability and an urgent end to the violence in the Middle East. Despite ongoing threats from both sides and continued bombardment of Gaza by Israel, the European leaders are pushing for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
The trio has also backed the efforts of the United States, Qatar, and Egypt to broker an agreement to end the 10-month-old conflict between Israel and Hamas. They have called for the release of all hostages being held by Hamas and for the swift delivery of humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza.
Amidst mounting tensions, Iran and Hezbollah have vowed retribution for the recent assassinations in Tehran and Beirut, sparking fears of a wider regional conflict. The United States has deployed additional military resources to the area, signaling growing concerns about the escalation of violence.
The European leaders’ statement aligns with similar calls for peace and humanitarian aid from US President Joe Biden, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, and Qatari Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani. However, all three European countries are still reportedly supplying weapons to Israel, with the UK government conducting a review of its export licenses.
